Labels are for jeans and jars. And they're used on people too... But what do they mean and why do we use them?
Labels can feel like oppressive stereotypes, or they can be a source of pride and comfort. Finding a group to identify with is sometimes an important part of the process of defining who you are--but defining anyone solely by the way they look, what they believe, or something they like or do is usually an insult to the many dimensions that make up a person.
What's in a name? A LOT! Have a look at where some labels came from and where they're going...

i smoke weed everyday and just because of that people assume i do other drugs like coke too even tho i would never touch any other drugs. Most people say weed is bad because its a gateway drug blah blah but ive been smoking weed since i was 12 and now im 17 and i still have not done other drugs. The most used labels at my school are slut, whore and skank. This is cause there are a limited number of worthwhile guys, and lots of girls go after them. So there's tons of cat fights. Luckily, I'm not interested in any guy at my school, yet some how girls still call me a whore. I know that I flirt with guys, but it's not enough to be called that. Girls just are trying to put others down so they feel better. It's all about being insecure or being happy with yourself. I'm fine with who I am, so in turn I get to know people before I think anything about them. =)

I am 15 yrs old and people give me all different types of labels...sometimes it's preppy stupid cheerleader, and sometimes it's Oreo (u know black on the outside, white on the inside) and it is wong. Before this year I was labeled a slut because my boobs didn't really fit my body yet and guys gave me a lot of attention because of that. Now that I have grown into my body ppl label me as a lesibian just because some of my closest friends are gay or bisexual but I always remind myself that I am who I am and if ppl have a problem with it they can go fuck themselves

Yeah... I don't really get made fun of for being Rockabilly. Sometimes I'll get the occasional "Is it Halloween?" or "I didn't know we were at a sock hop," or "So, how many bees are in your hive?" but that's about it really. Labels are ridiculous though. Once you're out of high school what is there? The real world, but younger people still try and make you feel bad.. which is dumb. So, really think before you say anything or the way you feel about your "label" because in a few years.. it just isn't going to matter.

Labels are pointless, ridiculous, and too often hurtful. I have been labeled 'emo', and 'indie' because of the way I dress. I have been labeled goth for the color of my hair and the music I listen to. People call me 'chink' because I'm Korean.
People who called me these things hardly knew me at all, but it still stung. There's so much more to me than what people see. I am 14 years old, but I am mature beyond my age. I never judge people according to outward appearances, and I accept people who deserve it. I can dress and act however makes me happy, but I am sensible and down to earth
And all you homosexual and bi people out there, I hear you. I'm straight, but I have many friends who are like you and I understand completely. People can be insensitive and rude, and they don't think about how they would feel in your situation.
Labeling hurts, so think twice before you do it.
