Have you ever felt really good about yourself, maybe after a big accomplishment, only to be shot down by someone who isn't (or is) as successful? If so, you've probably encountered a hater.A hater is typically someone who talks negatively about--or "hates on"--someone else. Hate is a strong emotion, and haters may not actually hate a person or group. They may, for example, just have some difficulty accepting someone else's success. Jealousy, racism and negative attitudes toward a group or an individual can also be telltale signs of a hater.
Disliking someone or something doesn't automatically make someone a hater. Sometimes people are labeled as haters just for voicing their opinion. Constructive criticism (like telling your best friend something she may not want to hear) can also be mistaken for hater behavior.
The word "hater" originated from the phrase, "Don't hate the player, hate the game." In other words, don't blame someone who fools around with a lot of people; blame the system (or whoever is allowing the "player" to fool around). For more about the label "player", click here.
Hip-hop artists popularized the word "hater" during the mid-to-late 1990s. Lil' Kim released the song Player Hater in 1996, and Mase released the song Hater the next year.
Over the years, "hater" has become more mainstream. Rock and pop artists use the word in their lyrics, and celebrities often use the word to describe people who put them down. For example, Hilary Duff recorded the song Haters on her 2004 self-titled album.
The term "hater" isn't only used in the music scene: A 2003 episode of the Dave Chapelle Show mocked player haters in the skit, "Player Haters Ball." On the show, rapper Ice-T awards Dave Chapelle's character, Silky Johnson, with the title "Player Hater of the Year." When Silky Johnson makes his acceptance speech, the crowd boos instead of cheers.
There are many variations of the word "hater." Mary J. Blige coined the term, "hateration"--basically a fancy way of saying "hatred"--in her 2001 single, Family Affair. The song is about letting loose on the dance floor without caring what other people think. Other songs on her album No More Drama are also about escaping negativity.
"Haterade" is another offshoot of "hater." The word is a combination of "hater" and the sports drink Gatorade. "Haterade" refers to an imaginary drink that causes hatred. You may, for example, jokingly offer someone some Haterade if they are putting you or someone else down.
"Hater" can also be spelled more than one way. When text messaging or talking to someone on the Internet, hater is sometimes spelled "h8r." The word can also be shortened to just "hata."
I totally agree with this article, and I can really relate to it. I'm goth, and a lot of people make fun of me. I don't give a crap about them though, they're just people with no lives who are jealous of my awesome skills. ;)Good luck to all you alternative people out there, we can pull through the hate.

Often used as a slang term for such a person when the reason for the dislike is perceived as unfounded or rooted in prejudice.

haters are just people who are unhappy with themselves or their lives so they want everyone else around them to be just as miserable as they are so they express their hatred outwardly toward their friends, family, teachers, innocent bystanders, ect. A hater can also be, for example, an ignorant dick who hates something they know nothing about, such as different races, cultures, homosexuality, that kinda stuff.

Usually when someone hates on you. You have something they dont. That's the real definition. Trust me, your closest friends could be your biggest haters but just remember, anyone who hates, is your #1 fan. Real talk.

I don't understand why people especially girls always suppose somebody is hating on them. This is nothing but a bunch of pure ignorance. First of all half the time the girl is either uneducated, failing classes, sleeping around, has at least one or two kids, so what is there really to hate on when the person doesn't have a good mindset or positive attitude. So I wish people would stop saying to all my haters, or I love my haters b/c the only reason why people say that is to appear and let me repeat APPEAR to be better than someone else and to make themselves feel better. Now I'm not in a box so I do know that there are girls who are very jealous, but don't assume all the time that someone is hating on you maybe they just don't like the nasty attitude or your personality. Examine your ownself first before you call someone else a hater! It's probably your character that's sending the wrong message.

yes there are such things as haters. people that don't like you for who you are. haters are people that think they are better than you. they talk about and do or say all types of stuff to you . because they want you feel bad about yourself ,when there's really no reason, they take time to make sure you are miserable. but all I know I love my haters - they make me greater!

However, there are numerous of haters everywhere. The majority of the times people know that they be hating; too. I took this from the internet from someone and it breaks down what is a hater and what isn't. Now, there are a lot of things that just irks the hell outta me and one of those things is how people now-a-days use the word "hater". I HATE when people call me a hater if I'm not being one, ESPECIALLY if they ask me my opinion of something. If I don't like it, THEN I DON'T FREAKIN LIKE IT...it doesn't mean that I'm "hating" on u. It means I'm being honest. I mean really, am I supposed to agree wit wat everyone likes even if I don't like it, HELL TO THE NAW!!! But anyway, this is MY definition of a hater, someone who constantly talks down about u to your face or behind your back, always has something negative to say, for absolutely no reason, when they see you're doing good or on the come up, or just being something like jealous. So the next time someone decides they wanna call me a hater they better make damn sure I'm acting like one (chances r NEVER) cuz if not they might just get treated. And that's just how I feel about it!

I am an honest person, and I tell it like it is. I give reality, but people love fantasy. When you give your opinion and just being honest, that don't make you a hater; especially when don't feel that type of negativity or anythang like that. People needs to know what makes someone a hater and what doesn't. I know what a true hater is and I know what a false one isn't. In that case, based on how people be calling others haters then everybody is a hater. People needs to think before they comment about that; too. My advice to people like me and what I described about myself: Let people like that call you a hater and simply laugh about b/c it is their ignorance, they are going to be stuck, and continue living in fantasy. At least the both of you one thing the can't stand the truth; etc.
