i know how you feel :)
everyone was telling me why you cut it look better longer
thinking i was a lesbian
but i just wanted a change too
Posted by: brenda | Dec 26, 2009 at 04:16 AM
I can absolutely relate to the lesbian cat-calls. Had my hair cut right before uni registration. It was such a big deal for everyone there, I was so surprised because 1)I've had short hair before. 2)Nobody knew so whytf where they being all hyped up about it. One lame-ass dude even screamed "lesbian" all the way from his room window. There are people who can be very narrow-minded sometimes. Oh yeah, I still have my short hair. :)

This is so true people just think they know you by looking at your hair. A lot of people say "I would never do that!" But they do, we all do. It is just natural. Now that girls are getting shorter haircuts it is bringing people out of the clouds and into reality. People can wear their hair any way and still be the same person.Like if the president suddenly grew a ponytail, it should not change your decisions about him(or her). We all know that but now the rest of the world has to catch up with us.

Shortie Bobs The shortest, sharpest take on a classic bob brings the cross-seasonal bob trend to its latest incarnation. Blended with strong, block colours the definition of the Shortie Bob says ‘statement hair’ in a youthful and edgy way.

Martina, I can totally sympathize! Granted, I never had super-long hair, just shoulder-length, but yesterday I finally went for The Big Chop. Fortunately, I've gotten mostly positive comments on it, but it still freaks me out at times that I can't, say, feel a swish when I turn my head to the side anymore! Oh well. I want to confound people now, not just make them expect the same haircut I literally had since kindergarten.
Oh, and there is at least one 80s lady with short hair you didn't mention in the comic—Jamie Lee Curtis! I think my new haircut makes me look a bit like her, circa A Fish Called Wanda. :)

I LOVED THIS. I just cut my hair short a few days ago and everyone makes such a big deal about it.

that's me!
so strange but i had short hair as a young girl and decided to grow it just to "rebel" against my mother's taste...so it grew down to my waist and made me look 12 when i was 15 (i have a very young face/figure anyways) so i cut it like posh's bob and that was grand. One guy told me it was 2 short and i looked ugly...how rude!i felt like crying but he wasn't worth it!
i still looked way 2 young and I'm 17 and a half now so i wanted a new style, a new me...in fact i just wanted 2 find "me" and i've always luved pixie cuts so i took d plunge last week...i finally luk my age!and have buckets loads of confidence now!
and anyways pixies are cute and i make one rockin pixie so to all stupid boys who like that short hair isn't for girls i dare them 2 say it 2 my face!
because I AM BEAUTIFUL WITH MY SHORT HAIR!

Thank you so much for this.
I cut my hair short. I told everyone I was going to do it too, but I've gotten the biggest screams once I saw it.
It was everything from "OHMIGODILOVEITSOOOOMUCH!" to "Holy! I need to get you a weave," and I wasn't so sure if I was into it as much anymore.
I've always had my hair short, but apparently this was DRASTIC, and I never felt like it was huge.
The worst part was the way people saw me outside of school. You see, I go to an all-girls school, so the general stereotype is that we're ALL lesbians, and then I got this haircut; The "d*ke-spike" just reinforced this stereotype and I just wanted to cry. My guy friend actually said to me "i thought you were bi."
Honestly, I heard drastic cuts mean changes in lifestyle. I was just waiting for it.
But this makes me smile. I AM NOT MY HAIR.

thank you for writing this. i cut my hair short as well.....and all of a sudden it was like - less guys hit on me, people dont call me pretty, etc etc.
when i cut it i thought i was less beautiful because of all this, but you're right, my perception of femininity has completely changed.....thanks again

Hey x
LOVE Short hair on Rihanna - it Just suits her!
Its funny because a week ago i had my hair up to my thighs and it took AGES to wash!
So I went to the salon and i cut it! It felt so good and i made my 'look'! My friends got used to it and i got asked out by my CRUSH! He said that it was cool i was a little out there. I'm thinking of trying Braided medium lenth? or dreadlocks...Maybe even out of controle bushy
You never know..
All i know is that i'll ALWAYS LOVE

LOL! i can totally relate to the ending! i have a pixie cut n boyfriend has dreads to his waist :D
Posted by: boo! | Jul 05, 2009 at 07:31 AM
I cut off my half long hair, so it was shorter in the back and long at the front, because I just love that kind of hairstyle. I think it's 'unique'.
Now, everyone seems to think of me as strange, perhaps even extreme, while I'm really quite shy and a bit of a tag-along. Strange...But I'm not gonna change my awesome haircut because of that.

OMG ME 2!! My hair is short like urs it's a "boy haircut" and EVERYONE is SO UNSUPPORTIVE!! "ohmigawd, marina, you look like a boy!" "Ew! That's like, sooo uglay!" These comments all come from MY FRIENDS WITH LONG HAIR. You just have to learn some catty remarks to throw back at them. ; D

I'm about to cut my hair short next week and i'm kind of freaked out about it... my hair is 3 or 4 inches below my shoulders and I want to go for an inch or more above them. This is exactly what I needed to calm my nerves. Thanks :)

Great comic....but what ever happened to updating once a week gurl.com? You havent had a comic....or really anything new in ages!
Posted by: JoJo | Jun 02, 2009 at 04:05 PM
It's so great you made a comic about this!
I cut ALL my hair off a few months ago. I went from nearly-elbow length curly tresses to a diagonal forward bob that was hardly an inch past my ears. I kept hearing all kinds of comments like the ones you were talking about. Funny thing is, my boyfriend's hair is shoulder-length now.

I cut my hair a year ago, to match rihanna'a edgey, pixie look, and i LOVED it! ^^ plan on cutting it again, next year for prom
*short hair dont care!* :)

love it; especially the part about your boyfriend <3
Posted by: Sarah | May 28, 2009 at 10:36 PM
My hair's a little past my shoulders, but VERY soon I'm cutting it in a mohawk with slightly longer sides and a shorter back (since my dad wouldn't agree otherwise). I'm redying it black and getting red streaks and I just got three holes in each ear after the two old holes closed up (six total is the most I've ever had, and that was literally two days ago xD). Best part? I'm not saying a word to any of my friends. I'm going to invite them over after everything's done and show it off no matter what they think. I can't wait, it's super hard to keep quiet about it but the suprise is worth it!

PLEASE
tell me that you donated your hair to locks of love. they make wigs out of donated hair for children with cancer.
it is a great cause.
if you are going from long to short, you should totally do it (you need to cut at least 10 inches in order to make a wig).
I personally hate short hair (on me) but every other year i cut it real short in order to donate,
luckily my hair grows fast

I adore short hair,
the majority of my girl crushes have pixie cuts
Agyness Deyn, Edie Sedgwick, Pixie Geldof
oh joy

Ha....one of my female friend has uber short hair, and one of my male friends has crazy long hair....and they go out with each other!
Anyways...I have cut my hair really short before, and it looked so bad b/c long hair complements my face (even when it's tied back, I have strands hang out over my face). Then I went with a short cut where it was shorter in the back, and longer in the front. It's awesome b/c it's short and easy to manage, but still complements my face.
I'm currently growing my hair out for the next 2 years so I have really long hair for prom. Then after prom, I'll probably want it shorter again (don't know how short), chop most of it off, and probably donate it.

heheh i love cutting my hair
and i didnt notice the whole stereotypes thing until i read this comic
thank YOU martina for making this comic
Posted by: L | May 25, 2009 at 11:45 PM
I've had super short, like maybe an inch long, hair for about a year now.I totally LOVE it!!! I was super lucky all my friends said it was totally me. I too once had waist length hair, but short is definatly better for me. I actually feel more femine now. Before with long hair I couldn't wear skirts or dresses or anything because I felt to "girly" and I never wanted to be stereotypical. Now I can totally rock out a dress and feel totally unique.
Posted by: Cassie | May 25, 2009 at 05:14 PM
I can TOTALLY relate! I have the wildest curliest hair out of anyone I know. I cut it. People mock me, asking what's wrong with my hair due to it's shortness and it's tenancy to become horizontal. My boyfriend also has hair past his nipples, while mine is just past my shoulders. People think it's "wrong" or "cute" and my family thinks I'm weird. Oh well!
Posted by: Becca | May 25, 2009 at 03:48 PM
This is a great comic!
I got my hair cut in March, (I think?) but the hairstylists were so professional they tought be how to make it look feminine, everyone is satisfied, except for my parents.
Posted by: I like cookies | May 25, 2009 at 09:29 AM
this was a great comic and i love all these comments! :] i went to the barber shop last november to get my once shoulder-length hair buzzed off to about a half-inch so i could go natural. I was cool with it within 5 minutes, but so many people spazed! i can't wear sweats and a tee or cargo shorts without someone thinking i look like a man or i'm a lesbian. but it's w/e--my hair takes only 5 minutes :]
Posted by: sel | May 25, 2009 at 03:45 AM
Wow, This is the coolest comic. I can totally relate. My hair is short, and I try everything to make it look feminine. But I say if you need hair to be sexy and beautiful, than you can rely on yourself for your own personal beauty. My boyfriend also has long hair, but he loves my short cut. Im glad so much of us can relate to this
Posted by: khadee | May 23, 2009 at 06:58 PM
This is wonderful.
I had hair down past my shoulder till Thursday night, now I have a little over an inch. I was called a lot of different things today, but this comic made me feel better.
Posted by: Mary Kate | May 22, 2009 at 11:57 PM
I totally dig this.
I have had short hair for about four years, and I have been called EVERYTHING in the book.
So I went ahead and went the extra mile, and got purple highlights.
Now I just get, "Wow, that color looks great on you!" >_<
Posted by: Mary | May 21, 2009 at 10:28 AM
When I saw this I gasped. My hair has always been the subject of others peoples lives. Finally, someone knows my pain.
About a month ago, I made a huge change to my hair as well. I decided it was time for a mohawk. My friends and family loved it, but I get told all the time that I look like a suicide girl and everyone has a bloody opinion on how to put it up. My favorite - egg whites. I'm not putting food in my hair, thanks. People get disappointed when it's not up. It really frustrating, but thanks for the great comic. I no longer feel alone as the girl with weird hair. Yay.
Posted by: maggie | May 20, 2009 at 02:54 PM
Last summer I was very frustrated and chopped off my hair above shoulder lenght. I liked it in the beginning but then really missed my long hair.
Short hair was so much more difficult to handle for me, but I guess everyones different.
I haven't cut any lenght off since and it's now under my shoulders. I plan to grow it very very long.
Posted by: tatyana | May 20, 2009 at 02:53 PM
about a year ago my hair reached my waist. but i was so pissed off with myself, life and so on, i decided to cut them all off. really short. and i have to say, i'm much more confident with short hair, everyone says i look like a model and don't have any problems with guys. but i have heard one or two comments about being a lesbian...whatever i think ;D i will probably never grow my hair again.
Posted by: Becky | May 20, 2009 at 01:09 PM
Omg this is so perfect when it comes to me. i got my hair cut right off before high school. It went from down to my waste to spiked at the back and chin lengthed at the front. Everyone told me how much better I looked befoer, how this was my "dike" haircut and how I would never get a boyfriend (even my friends!) I pretended I didnt care and laughed it off instead going angry and even more dike-ish. I had onyl wanted to seen different and have people (GUYS!) actualyl look at my face! Now I have a boyfriend and my hairs still short and he loves it!! More importantly so do i! i think this is great and no one but other girls really understand the trauma of cutting off your hair!! Its lifechanging.
Posted by: Amie | May 19, 2009 at 05:39 PM
I LOVED THIS. i've cut my hair really short before and i totally agree, but i've also had it really long. you can't let ppl decide who you are by your hair. [:
Posted by: HJ | May 19, 2009 at 06:05 AM
aeijfealjf i'm so happy i found this story - i'm cutting my hair off in 3 hours!!!! i completely completely agree with the having to find your own sexiness, and redefining femininity. it's a fact (or close to one) that boys are more sexually attracted to long hair, and i think FABULOUS! now i don't have to deal with the dingle berries who can't get their beyond a pair of boobs and long shiny hair. HERE'S TO ALL THE SUCCULENT WILD WOMEN WITH SHORT HAIR! huzza huzza.
Posted by: annie | May 18, 2009 at 10:25 AM
Haha that is soo weird I JUST got my hair cut really short 4 cancer @ my school the other day!! I even have dark brown hair! lol
Posted by: Em | May 18, 2009 at 12:18 AM
WOOT !! I was always known for my long long dark brown straight hair lol. ever since i was little when all the other little girls would play with my hair, i remember once 2 of my friends wanted to braid my hair they actually fought over my hair LOL. I was threatened to never cut my hair or else. but 2 years ago i finally cut it (ehh, sorta, my mom couldn't handle it so it was a little past my collar bone) But yeah this past month I cut it again and got side-swept bangs and awesome layers :3 now that i'm graduating from highschool i plan to cut it a little above shoulder length ;3 can't wait

I had hair down to the small of my back, and just shaved it all off one day.
When I had originally planned to do it, everyone got in an uproar, and it actually brought me to tears. It was offensive. They said I would look ugly, and would never succeed in life because only pretty people get what they want. XD How terrible is that? And why did they care so much about MY hair? People who I had lost touch with, wasn't even really friends with anymore, would tell me not to shave my head.
So once the hype died down, I just did it without telling anyone that time. And it looked really good.
People are... Silly. X3
Good on ya', Martina. Change is always fun, and it's admirable that you didn't let people's comments get to you.
Plus, short hair is always cute. :3
Posted by: Strawberry | May 17, 2009 at 11:54 AM
yay for short hair!!! But some times i miss my long hair cos i loved flipping it around lol
Posted by: Lexi | May 16, 2009 at 10:01 PM
Wow Martina, I'm part of a couple just like you. I chopped off my hair about a year ago, and my boyfriend has long wavy hair. It's very nice to play with!
Posted by: Jen | May 16, 2009 at 02:04 AM
I've also had majorly long hair throughout the majority of my life (except when I was five and recieved that mushroom cut, thank you mother...) and it was always a mess of waves, curls and ringlets but it was also really heavy. I had to wear it in ponytails all the time to keep it manageable. But like you, OTHER people made a huuuuge deal when I cut my hair to about chin length. I cut it because I also wanted a change. Short hair is amazing :D
Posted by: Kate | May 15, 2009 at 11:13 PM
OMG, I love guys with long hair. I think they are so hot. So anyway, I've been thinking about cutting my hair but have been to scared because me not looking like me any more.
