Abby, thank you so much for posting this. I recently Lost my cat (Scrappy)to Diabetes because we did not catch it soon enough. This has made my day so much better

That was such a great comic! It reminded me of my cat. :( His name was Ratatouille. He got hit with a car and it affected his kidney. He couldn't pee at all and it always killed me to watch him go the litter box and tried to pee and nothing came out. The doctor said we had five days. And if Ratatouille doesn't get any better, we'd have to make him go to sleep.
Unfortunately, it didn't turn out so well. There was no happy ending. :(
But I'm glad for your cat. This was a great comic.

D'aww! That's so cute! I love you, by the way, for trying to save your cat's life. I have my own cat (Shadow) who loves to snuggle with me, but not so much with everyone else.
If he had diabetes I would certainly want to treat him. Maybe it's just me, but I think animals are worth the money. It's only if they're suffering and there's no cure that killing them would be the kindest action.

i'm glad you were able to treat your cat.
my family just had to put down our 8 year old black lab because of cancer, and i know how hard it is seeing a member of the family [because that's what they are :)] sick.
good luck slinky!

I know the people on Feline Diabetes Message Board, saved my Charlie's life 5 years ago. Today he's a super kool... 17 year old guy who loves to cuddle.

Thanks for giving www.felinediabetes.com a shout out. They help Sooooo much when you feel overwhelmed at first and you learn so much. Many vets don't want to overwhelm owners, explain very little about how diabetes and insulin work together and people don't find the improvement they could, or even make it worse. This website helps fill in the gaps and helps you know what things to ask the vet. There are many kinds of food that *will* work for diabetic kitties as you learned. Pearl has become as naughty as ever and she also has two other conditions. With proper management, no one would ever know that she has anything. I even test her at home before each shot, like a human diabetic!

Abby,
Thanks so much for not only taking care of Slinky and learning all about diabetes in cats, but for getting the word out that diabetes isn't a death sentence for our beloved furballs.
And thank you for mentioning the Feline Diabetes Message Board in the last panel (www.felinediabetes.com). The folks there helped save the life of my cat, Cagney (www.cagneyscorner.com), and continue to help people and cats all over the world every day.

Hi! Thanks everybody for all the nice comments! You're the best!
Slinky is doing well and cute and lovable as ever. I was telling her she's famous now! To answer the question about food, our vet recommended I give her kitten food as it's lower in sugar, preferably Iams wet kitten food. 3 oz. when I give her the morning shot and 3 oz. when she gets her evening shot. I'm sure other cats would have different needs, but that's what Slinky was prescribed and it seems to be working out. Obviously nobody should try medicating or switching their cat's food around without their vet's specific instruction. ^_^
Sometimes the symptoms of diabetes can be signs of totally different problems, so if you see them get your cat checked out. I should also mention that the vet offered a payment plan if I couldn't afford it right away, so there is also that option.
Also, I have to give another shout-out to my boyfriend, relatives, and my friends who cat-sit and give her medication if I go out of town. They are awesome!

I actually didn't know that cats could have diabetes! That's a good thing for me to know.
I understand what you went through though, cause my cat Whiskers is a Manx, so she has a lot of genetic bowel problems, so she's sick a lot.
I'm very glad that Slinky is alright!

Thank you so much for posting this comic. As it turns out, one of my darling kitties, Hector, was diagnosed with diabetes just a few weeks ago. (The little fuzzy dummy's right now sitting in my window.) We've currently got him on special cat food and insulin that has a good chance of putting him into remission. I'm so glad to have my cat back, I don't even mind anymore when cries loudly and incessantly to be fed (we feed them at specific times of the day). The best of luck with Slinky!

My name is Abby, and I'm a cat lover, too!

Reading that story was like listening to someone telling me my own life. My cat Rory, who is the sweetest cat ever, had the exact same symptoms a couple of years ago - the drinking, the peeing, etc. We recognized the symptoms as diabetes in humans as well, and went through the same song and dance with expensive medical fees.
Now we give him 2 doses of insulin a day, and we've gotten the right amount, so his levels are stable. We also have him eating special food for diabetic cats. It really isn't as bad as it seems initially, and Rory's been living a normal, happy life since his diagnosis several years ago. :) Good luck with Slinky!!

One of my past cats had diabetes and had to be put down when I was about three. Since I was so young I don't really remember much, but Diva (which was a very fitting name, apparently) was almost nineteen when she was diagnosed and the vet recommended we have her put down instead of treatment. Our current cats are absolute love leeches though, like Slinky. ^^

Great comic! I too have a cat but unlike your angel, my cat, Herbie, is a little demon and hates baths, vet visits, etc. I'm glad Slinky is okay and that his treatment didn't cost too much.

Yes, even animals do that...
