One of the reason people avoid doing that would be they want to forget the hurt from a very broken relationship and the bitterness that grows in their heart every time they think of their ex...I think

I didn't date him, but I had a giant crush on him for like, 4 years.
And he left my school, so now I resent him because it's like he took those 4 years away from me. But he keeps in contact with people at my school, so whenever they bring him up, I'm just dead silent. It blows.

I know that I absolutely hate saying my ex's name (Nick). I really liked him incredibly much going on to the point of loving him, and he really broke my heart. He was actually pretty much a big jerk to me even when we were going out but I looked past it because i really liked him, and I wanted him to like me a lot too. Still, even though I tell myself that I can do a lot better, everytime I hear his name it reminds me of the times we shared, and really just makes me rather sad. :(

The reason we shudder at the sound of our ex's name is because we are scared to remember we were happy with them once. The happiness they gave us is now replaced. We don't want to remember or we might just want to reunite, then you think of the negative outcomes of the relationship which always over-rule...

I understand the ex thing! I have a few, and one of them in fact attends my school so I see him everyday. We talk on occasion, but it still is so awkward! And there's one other...(who's name is Paris, a name so beautiful that is the OPPOSITE of his personality) that everytime I see a guy that looks like him even a SMIDGET makes me sick inside. It's a terrible fact, really. I call that one "El Diablo"...my boyfriend always know who I'm talking about when I say that name, haha.

Generally I avoid saying my exes' (as in multiple), because they tend to have unusual, very recognizable names and I live in a fairly small area.
Also, a few of my exes are other girls and I don't want everyone to know I'm bisexual. So I say "my ex" instead of their name. :)
